Decorating your windows for Christmas

~Christmas Window Decorating; let’s go…

Now we’re nearly a whole week into December the Christmas countdown is well & truly on, transforming your home into a cosy winter wonderland should get you into the festive spirit.

Windows can often get overlooked when it comes to Christmas decorations however, an impressive window display can draw attention from passers-by but, also welcome friends & family into your home at the most wonderful time of the year. Window decorations are the perfect way to add Christmas cheer to your interior and exterior Christmas decor. Why not create a magical window display to be admired by house guests and passers-by alike?

Before you launch into a festive frenzy it’s important to consider the following factors to make sure your window display is both beautiful and practical…

Plan around the size and shape of your window it’s best to incorporate decorations that suit the size and shape of your windows. Large bay windows are perfect for grand displays with garlands, lights and hanging ornaments while, smaller windows may benefit from a more minimalist approach.

Factor in natural light – natural light is already scarce in the winter months so be careful your window display doesn’t steal away. While larger windows offer creative freedom, if you have smaller windows, opt for lighter materials, smaller features and delicate frosted ornaments that allow light to filter through.

Think about interior and exterior aesthetics – remember your window display will be a two-way showpiece so don’t forget to design one that looks good from both, inside & outside of your home. Matching your window decorations to other colours and textures in your interior and exterior design is a great starting point.

Keep it functional – letting in that winter breeze is the last thing you want. However, if you sometimes open your windows to ventilate a room or let steam out when you’re cooking don’t let your decorations get in the way of functionality. Make sure decorations can be moved if necessary, or hang them in an unobstructive place.

Safety – It’s imperative all decorations are securely fastened to avoid accidents, suction cups or hooks designed for windows are ideal. Avoid placing anything flammable in a window with curtains and switch off any mains-powered lights.

A couple of decorating ideas…

Incorporating lights – decorating windows with glistening lights is the perfect way to enjoy glowing decs from both inside and outside your home. Providing warmth and welcome, illuminated windows are a simple yet inviting touch to complete any festive display. Whether they are shining bright in the background of a Reindeer family showcase, or subtly nestled in your windows with a warm white glow, they’ll be a charming festive addition. If you opt for plastic stick on hooks / clips to attach your lights you wont damage your windows or leave any sticky residue.

Why not place your Christmas tree in front of your window? (if you’re lucky enough to have a bay window) The beauty of placing your tree in a window is that it can be enjoyed from different angles, inside and out. It does require decorating a bit differently as we have to think about the whole 360 degrees (more baubles possibly required)!

For a classic and traditional look, hang wreaths, pin-wheel paper decorations and colourful baubles from your handles to bring color to the interior and exterior of your living room. Get creative and use stencilling or spray snow to paint your own Christmas scene onto the glass.

Casement windows provide an excellent canvas for Christmas decorations, particularly if they have deep-set window sills. Opening outwards means you’ll never have to worry about your seasonal decorations getting in the way of opening your windows. Hang simple baubles with ribbon along with your windows for simple, elegant decoration and use the window sills to show off your festive collectables.

You could introduce a mini worktop Christmas tree near to the windows. Often the areas around your windows are just as important to work with.

If in previous years, you’ve ignored your window frames when decorating for the festive period, don’t make the same mistake this year! There are so many creative ways of dressing your window which, are bound to add some cheer to your home…

We hope you have a lovely Christmas & here’s to a happy & healthy New Year.
