Silent View Windows go over 10 Essential Facts to Consider Before Choosing a New Front Door…

We know that choosing a new front door is a big decision. Beyond looks and colour, the right door can improve your home’s security, energy efficiency, and even its value.

To help you make an informed choice, below you will find 10 key facts every homeowner should understand before buying a composite or uPVC front door;

1. Not all composite doors are the same

Composite doors are built in layers. Some use a solid timber core for strength and weight, while others have a high-density foam core for insulation and lower cost. Both are excellent choices but, serve different needs.

2. uPVC frames, skins, and finishes: What protects and colours your front door?

Every modern front door needs protection from the elements. That’s where the outer skin comes in. Most composite doors have a uPVC outer frame, and the core is wrapped in one of two main materials:

  • GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) – tough, weatherproof, and has a traditional textured woodgrain effect. Used on many doors, including the John Fredericks 44mm Foamcore and 70mm Composite ranges.
  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) – smooth, premium, and very impact-resistant. This is the skin used on Solidor doors, known for their sleek appearance and durability.

In short:
GRP gives a classic textured look. ABS offers a smooth, high-end finish. Both are strong just different styles to suit different homes.

Foil vs Spray: What’s the difference?

  • Foiled finish: A coloured or woodgrain-effect film that’s heat-bonded to the door skin. It’s ultra-durable and weather resistant, used on most composite doors including the Residence Collection and John Fredericks’ GRP-skinned ranges.
  • Sprayfinish: A specialist painted coating applied by hand or machine. It allows full RAL colour matching, typically seen on more bespoke ranges like the English Door Company. The finish is smooth and premium but may require more care than foil.

Tip: Foil is lower maintenance and comes in popular styles. Spray is ideal for customers who want complete colour flexibility or an ultra-smooth designer look.

3. Timber-alternative doors offer authentic style

If you live in a period home or conservation area, brands like The Residence Collection and The English Door Company offer uPVC composite doors that look like timber—with none of the ongoing maintenance.

  • The Residence Collection (R9 & R7) uses foiled uPVC profiles. These textured foils are bonded to the profile during manufacturing and give a highly authentic timber appearance. R9 even features a through-foiled rebate for added realism.
  • The English Door Company also uses foiled uPVC, with a realistic woodgrain effect. For bespoke colours, they apply a Kolorbond spray finish on top of the foil—offering a huge range of design flexibility. These doors are ideal for customers who want the charm of painted timber without the upkeep.

4. Chamber profiles boost energy efficiency

Inside a uPVC frame, you’ll find multiple internal chambers. For example, Residence 9 doors use a 9-chamber profile, and Residence 7 uses 7 chambers helping reduce heat loss and sound transmission.

5. U-values and G-values: What They Mean and Why They Matter

What’s a U-value?
U-values measure how well a door retains heat. Lower values (e.g. 0.8–1.0 W/m²K) mean better insulation and greater energy efficiency. This is crucial for meeting Approved Document L of Building Regulations in new builds, which sets strict thermal targets.

What’s a G-value?
G-values measure how much solar energy passes through any glazing in your door or side panels. A high G value allows more solar heat gain, useful in colder, shaded areas. A low G-value blocks excess heat, ideal for sunny, south-facing homes.

Why does it matter?
Understanding both U-values and G-values helps you select a door that’s comfortable year-round and compliant with building requirements. It’s especially important when specifying doors for energy-efficient new homes.

6. Security ratings matter more than you think

Look for doors tested to PAS24 standards and certified by Secured by Design (SBD). These benchmarks mean your door meets tough security criteria including resistance to forced entry.

If you’re installing a door in a new build or major renovation, it must also meet Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations. This regulation ensures doors and windows are designed to resist unauthorised access. PAS24 certification is the recognised standard to show compliance with Document Q.

7. High-security locks are standard on premium doors

Advanced locking systems like Winkhaus AV3 auto-locking and Ultion 3-star cylinders provide peace of mind. Many of our doors at Silent View Windows include these features as standard or optional upgrades.

8. Dual colour options offer inside-out flexibility

Want anthracite grey outside and classic white inside? Many doors offer dual colour configurations, so you can match your home inside and out.

9. Accessibility and ventilation features are built in

Many of our doors include low thresholds for easy wheelchair or pram access, as well as trickle vents (a small slot, typically found in door frames, designed to allow a controlled, continuous flow of fresh air into a room) to comply with Part F of Building Regulations.

10. Flush-fit designs are sleek and modern

A flush appearance means the door sash sits level with the frame, ideal for contemporary properties or homeowners looking for clean, minimalist aesthetics.
