Brief

Back in August, we were contacted by the owners, a family with three young children of a 1930s family home in Whiteleaf, just outside of Princes Risborough, our clients had only been in the property six weeks when we got the call & were about to embark on a full renovation. As with many homes of this era; the existing windows a mix of older white uPVC non-flush casements had become tired and, in several cases, had blown double-glazed units. The homeowners were experiencing issues with draughts, reduced thermal performance, and windows that no longer operated smoothly.

Because the renovation was being carried out in phases, the clients wanted to prioritise the windows early in the project to improve both comfort and appearance before moving on to internal work. Their goal was to upgrade to high-quality, energy-efficient windows without losing the character and charm of the original 1930s architecture. They specifically requested a style that would look appropriate for the age of the property, offer a true heritage feel, and provide a noticeable aesthetic improvement without appearing overly modern or out of place.

A key part of the brief was a request to enlarge the existing kitchen window. The clients felt the current opening was too small, sitting too high and restricted natural light. They wanted a wider, more open view of the garden and a brighter, more inviting kitchen space as part of their upcoming renovation. We carried out a structural assessment to ensure the enlargement could be completed safely and sympathetically to the property.

Throughout the process, the clients emphasised the importance of:

  • Maintaining the traditional character of the home
  • Improving energy efficiency and comfort
  • Choosing durable products that would remain in keeping for years to come
  • Ensuring neat, respectful installation with minimal disruption to family life

This provided us with a clear direction and helped guide the product choices and design decisions.

Our clients informed us that they had several other glazing companies visit to quote for the work however, Silent View Windows stood out immediately. They commented on the depth of knowledge, clear advice, and professional approach was far beyond anything they saw elsewhere. “From the initial consultation (Dean) to the installation, they made the entire process straightforward and reassuring, giving us complete confidence in our choice.”

Products used

The original white uPVC non-flush casement windows were removed and replaced with Residence R7 flush casement windows in Chalk White. This product was chosen for its blend of traditional styling and modern performance, making it ideal for homes with architectural character.

To complete the heritage aesthetic, we added crucifix glazing bars, giving the elevations a more authentic period feel, and fitted pewter monkey-tail handles, which offer a classic look while still benefiting from modern security standards.

Benefits of R7 Flush Casement Windows;

  • Authentic timber-look lines that sit flush within the frame, perfectly suited to heritage properties
  • Seven-chamber design providing exceptional thermal performance and improved energy efficiency
  • Durable, low-maintenance finish that avoids the upkeep associated with timber
  • High acoustic performance, reducing external noise
  • A wide choice of heritage hardware to match the era of the home
  • Secure multi-point locking, offering modern safety while maintaining a classic style

The combination of these features ensured that the new windows complemented the property’s original character while delivering a significant upgrade in day-to-day comfort, warmth, and usability.

Outcome

In total, nine windows were carefully removed and replaced with the new Residence R7 flush casements. The enlarged kitchen window was exactly as the clients envisioned, transforming the space perfectly. The increased glazed area brings in far more natural light, creating a brighter kitchen and offering a wide garden view directly from the sink, a feature the homeowners were especially delighted with.

The installation process ran smoothly, with our fitters maintaining a clean and respectful working environment throughout. The clients commented on how considerate the team were with their young children, who enjoyed watching the installation progress, and even with their very vocal cockapoo, who kept the fitters company from start to finish. A memorable touch was celebrating one of our installer’s birthdays complete with candles & cake!

The clients expressed how pleased they were with every stage of the project, from the initial quote to the survey, communication, and final fitting. They have already received numerous compliments on the new windows from visitors and neighbours. This installation forms phase one of their full renovation, and they have confirmed they will be inviting Silent View Windows back to replace the remaining windows and both the front and back doors.

We’re delighted with their feedback;  “We would highly recommend Silent View Windows to anyone looking for new windows or doors” praising the team’s professionalism, respectfulness, and excellent workmanship, along with leaving the property tidy at the end of each day. Another successful installation & some very happy customers for Silent View Windows!
