Brief

Replacing timber windows on a house is a significant project that can enhance energy efficiency, improve aesthetic appeal, and increase property value. This case study explores the replacement of ageing timber windows and doors on a Victorian mid-terrace property in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire. The objective was to address issues such as poor insulation, deteriorating wood, and outdated design while maintaining the home’s wonderful character and charm.

Built in 1898 with all the period features and just a stone’s throw from the picturesque village green with its duck pond, the house features traditional architectural elements, including timber-framed windows. Our client, Mrs Atkins, contacted Silent View Windows after several recommendations.

Mrs Atkins’ existing timber windows were showing signs of deterioration; the wood was rotting, and there were insulation problems – the single-glazed panes were causing a draught and heat loss. Caroline was after a quote to have them all replaced, along with new timber French doors and a front stable door. The overall aim was to replace all timber windows and doors with energy-efficient alternatives while retaining the traditional Victorian look and feel of the property. This, in turn, would improve the thermal performance, reduce energy bills, and minimise ongoing maintenance requirements.

Products used

Dean, one of our Sales Executives, and Director, Enis conducted a detailed survey to assess the condition of the existing windows and provided recommendations for suitable replacement options.

The homeowners opted for timber, sapele sash windows with double glazing. This allowed for better energy efficiency while preserving the property’s original aesthetic. The new windows were designed to replicate the style of the originals, including the sash design with subtle modifications to accommodate the double glazing. Sapele french doors were chosen, adding timeless charm with their rich texture and grain patterns.

Mr and Mrs Atkins were also looking to replace their old timber front door, which is now a beautiful sapele wood stable door. There are many benefits of having a stable door, one being ventilation – they can be opened to let in fresh air and natural light while keeping the bottom half closed to maintain privacy. But also, character – they add so much character to a property, which, when you’re working with a period property, works beautifully.

Outcome

The original windows and doors were carefully removed to avoid damage to the surrounding structure, and the new ones were installed! The new windows and doors preserved the property’s traditional appearance while adding a fresh, clean presence. Caroline said she had several people ask, “The house looks different, but we can’t think why,”? and this was exactly what they were after – a subtle yet transformative change.

When we asked Mrs Atkins what she liked most about working with Silent View Windows, she said:
The professional, friendly attitude of the workers. Their methodical, tidy way of working and respect for our home. Excellent skills, workmanship, and quality products.”

Our clients were more than happy with the end result. They have benefited from significantly improved energy efficiency as they only need to have their heating on for a short time because the warmth is now kept in the house and not escaping out of the windows.

“When the windows are closed, it is easy to forget we live so close to the road, as now there is less noise getting through.” Timber’s natural density helps block external noise, creating a quieter and more comfortable indoor environment, especially when paired with good quality double glazing.

“The process from start to finish went smoothly, and all stages were well explained. All staff are friendly and had a lot of patience at the stage of deciding styles, materials, etc.”

Conclusion;

The replacement of timber windows and doors on this 19th-century house successfully addressed the homeowners’ concerns while maintaining the property’s charm. By combining modern materials with traditional design, the project achieved a balance of functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.
