Brief
Blue Cross is one of the UK’s most respected animal welfare charities, with a mission to help sick, injured, homeless and unwanted pets. With roots tracing back to 1897, the charity operates across the country, providing veterinary care, pet rehoming, behavioural advice, and support for pet owners.
The Burford Rehoming Centre, set in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, plays a crucial role in rehoming hundreds of dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals each year. The site includes indoor and outdoor facilities for the animals, staff offices, visitor areas, and adoption meeting spaces, all of which need to be welcoming, comfortable, and energy-efficient.
As part of their ongoing commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and ensuring the best possible environment for both animals and people, the team identified a need to replace the aged wooden entrance door. It had become weathered over time, was no longer energy-efficient, and detracted from the professional appearance of the Centre’s main entrance.
Blue Cross approached Silent View Windows to deliver a solution that would:

To meet the Centre’s requirements, Silent View Windows supplied and installed a bespoke entrance system designed to be both functional and visually striking:
- John Fredericks Plastics French Doors (part of the Halo Heritage collection by VEKA UK) with integrated sidelights and a custom arched frame
- Finished in a timeless Rosewood on both the interior and exterior
- Glazed with A-rated toughened glass for optimal insulation and durability
- Low threshold for improved accessibility for both people and equipment
- Fitted with trickle vents to promote better air circulation
- Finished with gold furniture for an elegant final touch
The design and finish were carefully chosen to complement the character of the building while meeting the Centre’s performance and access needs. Our installation team completed the work quickly and efficiently, ensuring minimal impact on the Centre’s day-to-day operations.
Outcome
The result was a significant improvement in both the appearance and performance of the building’s entrance. The new door system offered superior insulation, helping to reduce heating costs and contribute to the Centre’s sustainability goals. The more welcoming entrance also created a better experience for visitors, staff, and potential adopters.
